Making from the Earth with Studio AMOS

September 13 and 14

Garrison, NY

Working with local materials, we’ll discover some of the treasures to be made from the land outside our doors. You’ll learn how to create a palette of ink colors from flowers and earth, as well as how to make brushes and marking tools using the basketry techniques of cordage and wrapping. No basketry or art experience is necessary, just a willingness to explore your own creativity.

What you'll learn:

-how to collect materials and inspiration from the surrounding land

-how to prepare plants for weaving

-how to make cordage and bind materials

-how to make simple pigments/inks from both flowers and earth

-how to create brushes and mark-making tools.

All materials and tools will be provided, as will a lunch both days from the garden, along with drinks and snacks throughout both days. Class is limited to 6 people. Payment in full is required to reserve your place. Address will be sent along with your confirmation. The fee for both days is $800.

About Studio AMOS:

Studio Amos is the partnership between designer makers Annemarie O’Sullivan and Tom McWalter. It is a small but mighty craft studio based in the Southeast of England, where they grow and harvest local materials to make objects ranging from functional baskets to statement lighting and large scale installations.

Getting Here and Accommodations:

The studio location is about an hour and a half north of NYC, and about an hour south of Hudson, NY.

Metro North trains (Hudson Line to Poughkeepsie) leave about every hour from Grand Central to Garrison Station. There is usually a train around 8:30 in the morning, getting into Garrison just before 10am.  If you need to be picked up from the station (and brought back to it after class), we will arrange for someone to meet you.

If you'd like to spend the night in the area, there are two inns very close by, both of which have good restaurants, The Garrison and The Bird and Bottle. There are also inns in the town of Cold Spring, 10 minutes away.
